Since some of you are using the essay questions from Living Outside the Lines as part of your curriculum this year you might find this post, What Did Ē-ssay helpful. QUESTIONS FOR HIGH SCHOOL

 Theme: Betrayal

Betrayal is a major theme in Le Morte d’Arthur. Write an analytical essay that first summarizes the betrayals of overlords to vassals and visa versa. Consider what motivates them to betray each other. Is forgiveness granted? If not, why? Secondly, include the Biblical explanation for our motives when we betray another and the proper Christian response when we are the betrayer and the betrayed.

Theme: Loyalty

Launcelot’s loyalty to Gwenyvere creates a problem for him in the Grail Quest? Write an analytical essay that summarizes the problem, how it was solved and then either defend the solution or argue against it using Biblical truth.

Theme: Revenge (or Vengeance)

Write a literature essay using vengeance as the subject. Site examples from the story like the feud between the descendants of Lot and Pellynore and The Tale of Balyn and Balan. Does the story offer any alternatives to vengeance?

Theme: Identity

Write an expository essay about the characters and how they define and establish their identities.

Theme: Rules and Order

Think about which rules the Knights of the Round Table are required to follow, how legal disputes are resolved, potential problems with the system and who or what is opposed to rule and order in Arthur’s kingdom. Then write a cause and effect essay about rules and order. Remember to site examples from the story to back up your thesis and proof statements.

Theme: Loyalty

Write a 5-paragraph essay showing how the knights in Le Morte d’sArthur demonstrate their loyalty to each other.

Theme: Revenge (or Vengeance)

Define vengeance and write an expository essay about how it is portrayed in the story.

Theme: Identity

Write a 5-paragraph essay telling about the characters who choose to conceal their identity in Le Morte D’Arthur, and why.

Theme: Rules and Order

Write an expository essay about the rules the Knights of the Round Table are required to follow according to the oath they take.
